jrbjr on "Gawith's Cabbie Mixture"

Hello

Need some help on this. i am looking at the components and it seems to be a close kin to SJF. Can those that have smoked both please let me know what the differences are between the two? I enjoy Dunhill Navy rolls, a bit more than Escudo. I enjoy Heinrich's Curly block, more than the one bowl of SJF I have tried. I am trying to get a feel where Cabbie Mixture fits.

Thanks

I have a great affinity for these tobaccos after trying it a little while ago. As you know it comes in gold foil bricks that are not sealed in any way and just wrapped in paper. I now have a little over 5 lbs to add to my cellar. I can not imagine it could get any drier than it is now.

How do you store this fine tobacco for years to come? Just leave it as is in the foill bricks and paper, jar it up, or vacuum seal it in storage bags like I do with Esoterica bags?

Thanks for the help!

Not tired of my Zebra or Walnut wood yet, but I decided to make a few other offerings for the TAPS pipe expo coming up in a couple of weeks. Went to my local Klingspor's this afternoon and picked up some blocks of Wenge, Cocobolo, and Granadillo wood. I wanted some Ebony, but they'd just had a sale last weekend and were sold out, so I went with this.

The first one I decided to cut and shape was the Wenge, which in my opinion, looks like a darker version of Zebra wood and is quite beautiful.

I love when I'm finished shaping and start fine sanding, working my way up through about 4000 grit micro mesh and buffing. You can really see how it polishes to a near mirror finish.

Next up will either be some Cocobolo or Rosewood. Thinking Rosewood.

Is there any way to sort by blend type or highest to lowest rating, etc. instead of just searching?

I had my first bowl of Grousemoor last night. It is by far the most cased, aromatic smoke I've ever had. It was sweet, juicy fruit candy like, with absolutely no tobacco flavor at all. I had to smoke a bowl of Royal Yacht afterwards, just to be sure I had actually smoked something and not just eaten candy. After only one bowl I haven't yet decided whether I like it or not. It is completely different from any other smoke I've ever had. It's weird. Totally different. I'm going to try smoking it in the morning on my way to work and see if it grows on me.

So, I’ve taken a liking to an aromatic. Appalachian Harvest by Ole Shenandoah. I love this tobacco. I could smoke it all day. But at 10 bucks a tin, it’s not cost effective. Any similar aromatics come in bulk? It doesn’t have to be premium taste but if it has a nice sweet taste and mellow finish plus decent room note I’d love to have an everyday smoke similar to the aforementioned blend. I tried Antietam by Brigadier Black and found it extremely smokable, perhaps one of BB’s other blends?

With all of the talk about unavailable/discontinued blends I thought I would post a list of blends I always try to order when the funds are available. Whenever there is a good sale I grab a few tins of what I can if they're available. They usually are with the exception of a few but even those don't disappear within minutes/hours of people finding out they are in stock. (I'm not sure about the Sav 140 availability.)

Keep in mind, I'm relatively new to the pipe smoking world so these the blends that hit me during the first bowl as "need to get more". I'm trying to build up a really good stock to have and help space out the many, many other blends I'm enjoying trying. These are my "old friends" that I will always revisit from time to time so I'll never grow tired of them and still get to enjoy other blends.

Without further ado:

Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding Special Reserve
Seattle Pipe Club Mississippi River Special Reserve
Seattle Pipe Club Potlatch
Savinelli 140th Anniversary
Vincent Manil Le Petit Robin
Savinelli Doblone d'Oro
Ashton Artisan's Blend
Cornell & Diehl Dreams of Kadath
Cornell & Diehl Mad Fiddler Flake

Hopefully the list works.

Hello all, I'm from upstate NY in the fingerlakes region. Been smoking for a few years now, I'm 25. Like others I'm a long time lurker, but figured I'd join to learn more. I really only smoke corn cobs. Only ever smoke otc old time tobacco like Carter Hall, Captain Black, and Half n Half but would like to branch out more. When I'm not smoking my cobs it's backwoods cigars.

Have a good one

It was a typical drive home from work today, traffic accompanied by foolish drivers who believe the roads belong to them. The work day long and uneventful. As I pulled into my driveway, i spotted a familiar cardboard box by the front door. I didn't know for sure what was inside this mystery package, as i have been pretty loose with my online purchases as of late, but one order in particular jumped into my mind. One i had been waiting weeks for, trying to forget about it yet always in the back of my mind taunting me. Could this be the one? Could the wait finally be over ? I stopped my truck, barely got it into park and leaped out. My keys flying out of my hand as i dashed up towards the front porch. My eyes pinned on the box laying on the ground before me. My mind was racing with excitement. I picked up the box and began reading the label to confirm that the wait was finally over...It was... I held the box tight and lifted it into the air, yelling at the top of my lungs Wooooooooooooooo Woooooooooooo. The sun appeared and the skies parted and for a brief moment there I swear I heard music. I wiped my brows and looked around. There was no music, only the dinging of my car door which i had left open and the neighbours staring at me with blank and confused looks. I closed up my car, grabbed my keys, waived to the neighbours and made my way inside.
They may think i'm weird but little did they know my first tin of Black Frigate had finally arrived, it's gonna be a hell of a night.
Permission to come aboard mates ?

Currently the only three tobacco's in my rotation have been:
Captain Black Royal
Captain Black original
Dunhill London Mixture

I currently have:
3 MM Cob pipes
1 Yello Bole Burley(bent stem) for aromatics
1 Brigham Mountaineer 316

Can anyone please suggest other pipes. And suggest please some tobacco.
I find Dunhill pleasant. I have been favoring however Captain Black.
If that makes any sense?

Not sure if my method is any good or not but I thought I'd post it to give others here some ideas.

I don't smoke a lot so it takes me some time to get through a tin but I like to take advantage of sales. When SPC Please Pudding SR is on sale at buy 2 get 1 free, I buy 4 and get 2 free. Here's how I store my surplus for future use:

Mylar bags:

Oxygen absorbers:

Food saver machine:

Writing implement:

Heaven in a tin:

Seal only (no vacuum):

Results:

Some additional information:

I use my lungs to remove as much air from the package as possible before sealing. One of the issues with mylar bags is they mostly require a special and expensive machine. This is okay since I don't use the vacuum when doing this. By not putting the tins under vacuum it is less pressure on the tins factory seal. Also, the oxygen absorbers should help mitigate any air inside the package. Also, some mylar bags require a special machine to heat seal them. The ones I use supposedly don't need anything special. As best I can tell is they seal just fine with my food saver machine.

Anywho, that's what I do. Hopefully this helps someone.

mordy18 on "Pipe Tobacco Availability Frustration"

As a new pipe smoker I'm struck by the lack of availability of many highly recommended blends that are supposedly still in production. I wanted to try a tin of Samuel Gawith's pure Virginia flake but it isn't available on line anywhere. Most Dunhill blends are gone (I bought a few tins of the ones I could find, and so far really have enjoyed Durbar). Esoterica? Forget about it. And quite a few others that have had very positive reviews are no longer available, not to mention all the Mclleland stuff that recently disappeared. And then I see people selling huge collections of "cellared" tobacco on this forum or on ebay, often at ridiculous premiums. (There seems to be plenty of Captain Black available.)

Quite frustrating. Has it always been this way, or are shortages growing? Or is this due to hoarding? Is the premium, desirable stuff more readily available in the UK?

Checkout the fabulous new Dunhill line of clothing!

According to the Dunhill site:
Lightweight jackets, casualwear and leather accessories. A new collection inspired by the precious stones and minerals of archive dunhill lighters.

"Archive Dunhill Lighers". LMAO. Clothing inspired by smoking accessories, which the company divorced itself from. Now trying to capitalize on "heritage" without mentioning true history.

Feast your eyes boys!

Hello everyone, Marc here. Recently retired, I’ve been smoking a pipe since I got out of the Army in mid 80’s. Nothing fancy, Prince Albert and the different aromatic Captain Blacks. The wife doesn’t mind the Cherry Cavendish... I have a few good pipes ranging from Peterson , Albertson, a new Rattray (the judge) some from my Great Grandfather in Belgium to a knock around Dr Grabow. Here to learn a little more of a hobby I love...

I have been kicking the idea around of starting a local pipe club here in Long Island New York since I picked up a pipe.
Recently I met a few fellow pipe smokers on Facebook who showed an interest. I have been doing some footwork and think we have the beginnings of
A club.
Today I went to a local B&M and found that the gentleman running it has some great pipe knowledge and is willing to have us as a group.
If there is anyone here from Long Island interested I hope you will get back to me and we can get a groundswell going.
That said I could also use some advice on starting a pipe club. One of our people was talking about registering with the UPCA.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
