shermnatman on "Hearth & Home Mid-Town: Prince Andrew"

$

Hearth & Home Mid-Town : Prince Andrew - I received the 14oz tub (normally retails about $30) for only $12.50 pro rata; due to being combined on a special-offer with the purchase of my regular order of the 14oz tub of Middleton's: Prince Albert (normally about $37.50), in a promotion called: "A Princely Punch-Out" for a total of $50.00 for BOTH 14oz tubs.

That was the first nice thing about my experience trying-out H&H's Prince Andrew pipe tobacco.

Normally, I would not buy an entire tub of a mixture that I had never tried before; however, for essentially the price of two 2oz pouches of Prince Andrew - and picking-up the residual balance 10 extra ounces and the tub itself for "free" - how could I resist?

First-off I wish to be perfectly clear that Prince Andrew is NOT a sly misnomer for an intended Prince Albert MATCH.

What Prince Andrew is, is a COMPARABLE to Prince Albert; which simply means that it is SIMILAR TO Prince Albert, but not trying to be exactly the same thing; and that it is, indeed!

Now, what did I find as different?

Upon opening the Prince Andrew tub, the first thing I was immediately struck with was that Prince Andrew has wonderfully strong and highly odoriferous "boozy" pouch-note to it. This thrilled me no-end, as I am currently in a love-affair with other very popular boozey blends, such as: C&D's Black Frigate, and, Super-Value's Bourbon Whiskey.

I find Prince Albert has. to me, a very familiar "raisin" pouch-note foremost.

Upon smoking, I was delighted and surprised by the fullness and depth exhibited by Prince Andrew. This truly is a masterful mixture. I could certainly taste the similarity to my old favorite, Prince Albert, but there was just enough of a delicious difference to recognize Prince Andrew as it's own pallet-pleaser - yet comparable in similar taste to Prince Albert.

What Prince Andrew does not exhibit in terms of the distinct and exact signature secondary flavorings found in Prince Albert, it rather exhibits in a deep richness and dimension of it's key flavor bass-note; which Prince Albert does not share.

Will I give up Albert for Andrew? No.

Will I give up Andrew for Albert? No.

Because Prince Andrew was such a flavorful, full, and wonderfully satisfying smoke, I will be buying and smoking BOTH mixtures from now on. I am very much looking forward to switching back-and-forth between these two "Princely" mixtures for added variety in my work-a-day pipe smoking.

If you are a stead-fast Prince Albert fan, as I am, I cannot see how you will not be overly-pleased if you give H&H's Prince Andrew a try in your own pipe; for the simple reason that if the taste of Prince Albert appeals to you, then there is no reason you should not also appreciate Prince Andrew - as these two mixtures are most certainly "comparable" to one another; in both class and taste.

So, in the end, who won the so-called: "Princely Punch-Out"?

I did.

I was "totally knocked-out" by the wonderful promotional deal I received on both tubs of these two fine tobaccos; and newly, by Prince Andrew, and as always, by my ever-faithful, Prince Albert . - Sherm Natman

"Know, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars - Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyberborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west." - Robert E. Howard; Conan: The Phoenix on the Sword; 1932.

Bought this a while back. Tried to learn a little history first but there is not much on the Internet despite spending a moderate amount of time looking. Pipedia has several paragraphs and some pictures but very little on the earlier pipes. This forum has several entries on Orlik but doesn't mention the serif script or the Old Bond Street Don't know why more information is not out there?? This is a smallish Lovat. The Orlik name is in sarif script with Of Old Bond Street underneath. On the right side is Made in England and the shape number C37. It does have a small stinger as well. Needs a little cleaning and should be ready to go. Any history, dating or comments always welcomed. Thanks, Hoppes

Pipe Novelist on "Any Magic: The Gathering Players Around Here?"

So I picked up Magic: The Gathering back around 94 or 95 from my brother who was pretty big into it at the time. I used to play with him and his friends and played continuously until the end of the original Urza's block, then dropped out of the game for a while. I introduced a friend to it around the time that Dark Steel and Fifth Dawn rolled around and we played for a little while, then kind of dropped off again until a few months ago when a few of the local neighborhood kids said that they played. When I saw the sheer amount of stuff that I skipped out on over the years, my mind was blown. I picked up watching The Command Zone and fell in love with the EDH format. I talked to my friend that I had played with all those years ago and showed him The Command Zone, and we both immediately clamored to get back into the game, because honestly, EDH looked like the most fun thing to do ever. We all now have a huge get together every other Friday night, where there are anywhere from 5 to 12 of us all engaged in a rotating game, and I also routinely participate in Commander nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays at my two local LGS locations. I've met a ton of great people doing this and it's such a rich, rewarding, strategic game with several thousands of different strategies and ways to play. So to my fellow Magic players, where you all at?!

Have a pair of Thinking Man Peterson pipe lighters that have performed flawlessly for the two years I’ve owned them. I lost the flint spring mechanism when I was changing a flint, one of those cases where ‘I just set it down’ kind of things. So I emailed Peterson customer service last week asking for the price of a replacement spring. That same afternoon, a rep emailed me back asking for my mailing address & said there was no change. Today the spring showed up in the mail!

I've already professed my love for Carter Hall. Today I bring you Captain Black. Again I'm amazed with this one right out of the pouch. Lights, burns, and flavorful.

I'm amazed, I would never have thought Capt Black would be worth smoking.

Im frightened by the grape. But I will try the others!!

Please join us for our next meeting on Thursday, March 28 at 7:00 PM at David's Fine Tobaccos in Clive.

This month's spotlight will be pipe restoration: cleaning up stems, reaming, fixing loose stems, cracked shanks, and anything else you have questions or experience with.

We won't have a new tobacco sample from Sutliff this month, so the blend of the month is TBD. If you've got something special to share or have a request to try something, just let us know!

Once again, the fine folks at David's have offered to stay open late and let us meet until 9:00 PM. We thank them for their continued support, and encourage everyone to support them in return.

Additional details available on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1023782628010249/

Finally, FYI, we now have an Instagram account for the club: https://www.instagram.com/desmoinespipeclub/. If you're at all interested, follow us there and we'll see if we can get some traction on that platform. In the past, we haven't been very effective users of social media, so if you are interested in helping us grow online (instagram, facebook, twitter), please get in touch.

See you on the 28th!

odobenus on "q-tip removes stain from rim"

Hey folks, if I think of it and have time, after smoking I use a q-tip (with some filtered water on it) to lightly clean the tar off the rim (as outlined so well by Lawdog in the last issue of P&T Mag). I've found that, with a couple of my pipes, this removes an alarming amount of stain. So far I've found this with my Peterson Aran and a Charatan Belvedere (red stain) from the 60s.
Most of my pipes clean up nicely with this method, but I'm wary of finding out which others are going to lose a layer of stain each time I do it.
Anyone else find this happening to them?

I have a twenty one and a half inch kiseru that I call my Papa-San pipe and just bought another that’s twenty nine and a half inches. I also have some of the Japanese tobacco that is appropriate for them.
The thing I like about them is that they have larger bowls than the diminutive ones that you see on the smaller kiseru. A good sized pinch of takara bune gives me a nice relaxing half hour smoke.

Very recently I got me two brand new Ashton* Pebble grain pipes, Very pleased with these, good value and smokes well, however, there is one thing with which I'm not so pleased, and this is the button part of the stem which is unbelievably high and something uncorfortable to my likings, now shall I consider filing the button edges down on these pipes? Overall these stems are very well finished and high-quality materials so I have no complaints whatsoever on craftsmanship. Thanks for the tips,

I've never had a Castello either new or used. Tobaccheria Corti had one last 55 for a very good price---couldn't resist. Only took 3 days from Italy to Oregon. Don't know when I'll get a chance to break it in but hope it turns out a winner. Here's the pics. Hoppes

Very small weeding of the cellar (closet) based on my taste preferences.

(2) sealed tins of Esoterica Dorchester from late 2018 - $20 each. My least favorite of the VaPer by Germain, but loved by many. Buy both and I'll throw in the ounce or so from the open tin I have as well.

(1) sealed tin of Esoterica Margate from late 2018 - $20. I just have too many Margate tins versus my smoking frequency of this blend.

~1.5 oz jarred from 50g tin of Butera Royal Vintage Blended Flake purchased 2017. Golden Cake is in my top 5 blends of all time list, but Blended Flake was a little too strong and complex for my taste. $20, because it's extinct.

~4.9 oz of MacBaren Virginia #1 Bulk. Purchased local a few weeks ago, was once a favorite of mine but my tastes or body chemistry have changed. $15 for the bag.

(1) travel cigar humidor, cedar interior with black vinyl padded exterior and zipper case. About the size of a large book (about 12x9x3). Rediscovered in my closet, I haven't used it in probably 10+ years. Good condition, slight greying of cedar in spots inside. I don't smoke cigars anymore, so have no used for it. If anyone is interested I'll send photos. $25 OBO.

Shipping costs calculated at purchase via USPS. Paypal friends & family.

Hi Everyone:

About 30 fresh estates have been posted in the last months, along with several new pipes by Dave Neeb.

On the Italian page, almost all pipes have been "Five-Starred", meaning that you'll get a 15% refund when you buy one. Look for the Five Red Stars right after the price. There are other Five Star discounts all over the site.

Check it all out HERE!

mtwaller on "Estate Peterson Spigot 120 w/ Question on Condition Issues"

$

I just bought a Peterson Spigot 120 basically sight-unseen for $80 (I saw it in a far away shot of about 15 pipes and I said "I'll take the spigot!"). It came in today and I've been trying to clean it up a bit. Overall it cleans up nicely, but there are a few condition issues. There are a couple of gouges on the outer edge of the rim, the inner rim is pretty dark, and there is a nice ding in the silver cap on the stem. These cosmetic issues, while unfortunate, no doubt contributed to the $80 price point, and overall I still think it's a fine looking pipe.

However, the chamber shows some serious over-reaming which I tried my best to capture below. While I can't exactly stick my finger in them, there is some crater action going on in there. Should I be hesitant to smoke this pipe, or make sure I smoke it far less frequently than my other pipes? I'd obviously hate to burn through the bowl, but I would also hate to not be able to enjoy this beauty as often as I'd like.

Also, does anyone know if this is specifically a "Smooth Spigot", or otherwise? The stamp on the shank simply says "Spigot". Thanks for the help!
