I just got back into smoking. Needed a pipe because what I had is long gone. Decided to try out a plastic model with a metal insert. I do plan on getting another one, but for now it was cheap and I don't really trust the wood the shop I went to had on hand. So far it smokes pretty decent and I like the shape (6" bent), but the jury is still out on durability and such. I was just wondering if any more experienced smokers have used these and what their thoughts were?

Kevin on "Chance Whittamore on Radio Show of March 26, 2019"
Our featured interview on The Pipes Magazine Radio Show tonight is with Chance Whittamore. Chance is known as “Great Estate Pipes” on eBay. He is an expert pipe repairman, and refurbisher, currently residing in Anaheim. He has spent time as a tobacco farmer. He has also been a professional, label-signed, bassist and guitarist in a couple of different bands. In our opening segment, we will have “Ask the Pipe Maker” with Jeff Gracik.
mikethompson on "Does Any Pipemaker Still Use Stingers/Condensers?"
I don't think I've read anything in descriptions of new pipes that mention a stinger or condenser or carburetor, but are they still out there? Or are they just gimmicks of a past age?
mau1 on "Tinsky Stamping"
In browsing through the Tinsky article in Pipedia, I noticed a picture of a stamp with the following:
American
Reg No_
0485/*Z 7
Now I know it's American Smoking Pipe Company, April 1985, but the *Z 7 puzzles me. Other pictures show CR (Curt Rollar) or MT (Mark Tinsky) in the stamp. Is the *Z a shape, and 7 the grading?
Anyone in the know?
Thanks
mikethompson on "What Pipe tops Your PAD List Right Now?"
For those of us still working our way through PAD, what is tops on that list right now? Some exquisite carved Meer? Vintage British briar?
For me it is one of these, a Peterson from the Tara line.
anglocatholicpiper on "Unmarked CAOs?"
It seems like a good deal of Meers are unmarked, even many nice ones. But I came upon an unmarked estate meer in a case (that fits) with a CAO sticker. It's beautiful and already coloring like its block meerschaum (much like my Altinok). But I'm wondering if unmarked CAOs are common/uncommon? Basically: without the markings, can I be sure it's a CAO?

familyfarmer on "Bit Style"
Is there any technical relation to the bit style, or is it simply personal preference. I tend to go for the bent bit. Im exclusively using cobs at the moment. I'm carving a piece of 60 year old Walnut burl into a piece and am contemplating the stem design.
pipefish on "Unique Pipe Shapes"
I came across this website tonight and thought I'd share it with you kind folks. These pipe shapes are amazing and the makers appear to be mainly from Europe (the company is located in Germany). Some of these designs are absolutely incredible--the Andrey Savenko collection really caught my eye. These pipes aren't cheap, but the company offers free international shipping, so careful PAD doesn't strike you!
jrbjr on "Mississippi River special"
Hello
I'm newer top pipe smoking and wanted to expand my horizons a bit. I was able to find early morning pipe and my mixture from dunhill in bulk. Like them both, then someone at the pipe store suggested this blend. I thoroughly enjoy it, I've purchased a few extra tins to cellar. I was told it was an English, but I really don't taste a great similarity to the above Dunhills. What am I missing,? Did it have less of somthing than the others, are all three pretty comparable? Appreciate your insights.

shanez on "Searching For Affordable But Good Meerschaum"
I've been looking at and reading about meerschaums and would like to get one for my pipe collection.
I'm hoping to spend about $49-$69 and want something of reasonable quality. It's easy to see that an intricately carved pipe just insn't in that range but that's okay. I can't imagine how long it takes some of these guys to carve the pipes the way they do.
Here's where I'm at so far:
I'm seeing brands such as CAO, IMP, SMS, AKB, and Royal(?). There are also plenty of pipes without reference to maker available. CAO and IMP are out of my budget. I'm not sure if Royal is a manufacturer or just a retailer.
With SMS, AKB, and Royal offering plenty in my price range I'm now stuck. AKB seems to be screw in tenons and not something I want. Are SMS and Royal also screw ins or are they decent?
SMS has a nice looking carved tiger pipe for $59 and Royal has a smooth Dublin for $52.
Are either of these okay or should I be looking at something else? Are there more manufacturers?
All opinions and suggestions are welcome. Thank you.
shermnatman on "The Black Frigate Will Be Docking Here On Tuesday 19MAR2019"
After reading so many enthusiastic posts about C&D's Black Frigate, I added it to my March order from P&C; which is due to be delivered to my home on Tuesday - 24 hours from the time of this writing.
I am looking forward to experiencing my maden-voyage with this tabak, and will share my impressions after I have spent some time with it on a shake-down cruise. If my experience is filled with even half of joy of what others have proclaimed about this mixture, I can anticipate quite a treat.
While making my decision to try Black Frigate was very easy based on so many vocal enthusiasts here on the forum trumpeting it's magnificence, I am still on the fence about trying another mixture I have heard about called: Haunted Adult Bookshop - not so sure about that one. - Sherm Natman

odobenus on "New Blakemar"
Folks, I did not know about Blakemar Briars -- nor its long and storied history -- until very recently, but I remedied that. I recently received this new Litchbruyere Woodstock. It's beautiful, and has a fatter shank than I've seen on most Zulu/Yachtsmen: tapered, almost snail-like. Mike also makes a Zulu shape and I'll confess that I don't know the difference.
Yesterday I loaded it for the first time with some Skiff Mixture, which I probably should've dried but did not, and it smoked wonderfully -- not a drop of moisture. Really pleased with the craftsmanship here. Check them out if you haven't yet: http://blakemar.co.uk/
